On the morning of Monday 2 August 2027, the sun will go out over the beaches of Cádiz. Spain's National Geographic Institute (IGN) puts almost the whole province inside the path of a total solar eclipse, with darkness arriving at about 10.45am, at the height of the Spanish summer. It is the strongest reason to plan a European beach trip for summer 2027, and it is already the hardest to book.

New flights also open up Thassos to UK travellers and Ibiza, north-east Sardinia and the Azores to Americans. Two lists published in 2026 have put an Atlantic cove in the Algarve and a Swedish peninsula on the map. Below are eight European beaches with a dated, checkable reason to go in summer 2027, starting with the eclipse and the UK routes, then the new nonstops from the US.

Totality reaches Cádiz city at 10.45am peninsular time and lasts 2 minutes 54 seconds there, according to IGN's eclipse page. The longest totality anywhere in Spain is in Ceuta, the Spanish enclave you can see across the strait from Tarifa, at 4 minutes 48 seconds. Part of Málaga province and the southern edges of Granada and Almería are also in the path, but Cádiz is where the shadow covers almost everything.

Euronews calls it the longest eclipse on easily accessible land until 2114, and IGN says no other total eclipse will be visible from Spain until 2053. Those two facts explain the bookings: in August 2026, Euronews reported that many properties on the path were already full. If you want a bed within reach of the coast, book it now and choose a cancellable rate.

At totality the sun will be almost due east and about 38 degrees above the horizon, according to NASA's eclipse path tables, so pick a spot with a clear view east. Bolonia, west of Tarifa, is the obvious pick: a long pale bay with a protected dune at one end and the Roman town of Baelo Claudia behind, which our guide to quiet beaches in Spain covers in full. Los Lances, the long beach running north-west from Tarifa town, gives you more room and an easier walk from a hotel. Expect both to be crowded.

The first week of August is peak Spanish holiday season even without an eclipse, and Tarifa's wind can blow sand hard enough to make a long wait on the beach miserable, so have a fallback on a terrace or headland. Watch the partial phases only through certified solar-viewing glasses. NASA says you can take them off only during totality, and must put them back on as soon as any of the bright sun reappears.

If a packed beach at breakfast time is not your idea of a holiday, the next pick is the opposite: a quiet Greek island that UK travellers can reach in one flight from May.

Thassos gets direct flights from Manchester, Birmingham and Stansted

Thassos is the green island at the top of the Aegean, close enough to the mainland that most visitors arrive by a short ferry. In March 2026, Jet2 announced it would fly there for the first time in summer 2027, using Kavala's airport on the mainland, which makes Kavala its 16th Greek airport. The schedule from the airline's release:

  • Manchester: Tuesdays and Fridays, 11 May to 1 October 2027.
  • London Stansted: Tuesdays, 11 May to 28 September 2027, a route only Jet2 flies.
  • Birmingham: Wednesdays, 12 May to 29 September 2027.

Once-weekly routes leave little room when a date sells out, so if you need a particular week from Stansted or Birmingham, book it early in 2027 at the latest. Jet2holidays sells hotels in seven resorts, from Thassos Town (Limenas) on the north coast and Golden Beach on the east coast to Potos and Limenaria in the south-west, and its packages include return transfers: the ferry, then a coach.

Booking flights only, you make the last leg yourself. The airport is at Chrysoupoli, about 30km from Kavala, and the Municipality of Kavala's visitor site lists daily ferries from Keramoti, the nearer port, to Limenas, and from Kavala's port to Prinos. For timetables and fares it refers travellers to the Kavala Port Authority. Check the operators' own timetables for your dates, since they change between early summer and August.

Golden Beach, the long sandy bay on the east coast, is the resort most people picture. It suits families and anyone who wants to walk into the water rather than climb down to it. If you want Cycladic whitewash and nightlife, look elsewhere. For more of the Greek islands, our Greece beach guide goes island by island. The next two picks owe their moment to a ranking rather than a route.

Monte Clérigo, voted Europe's best beach for 2026

In May 2026, European Best Destinations named Praia de Monte Clérigo, on the Algarve's wild west coast near Aljezur, the best beach in Europe. It is the cove the organisers call "the Sunset Beach", a crescent of sand between cliffs inside the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, where building is tightly limited. Summer 2027 is the first season you can plan from the start around the title.

Know what kind of list it is. European Best Destinations' editors shortlist about 10 beaches per country and send their top 30 to an international panel of travellers, who vote on the order. It is a popularity contest with an editorial filter, not an inspection. The rest of its 2026 top 10 includes several beaches we have reviewed: Fteri in Kefalonia in third, Elafonissi in Crete in fourth and Rovinia in Corfu in eighth.

Monte Clérigo faces the open Atlantic swell, with cooler water and bigger waves than the sheltered south coast our Algarve guide covers, and the handful of houses behind the beach has few beds to offer. European Best Destinations puts it about 110km, or an hour and a half by car, from Faro. With so few beds and a new title drawing visitors, book in spring rather than June.

Skanör-Falsterbo, the Swedish beach on Lonely Planet's list for 2027

Lonely Planet's Best in Travel 2027, published in September 2026, picked the twin towns of Skanör and Falsterbo, at the south-western tip of Sweden, as one of its destinations for the year. It is the list's only Scandinavian destination, and Lonely Planet calls the peninsula the Swedish Riviera. Its beaches are fine white sand and dunes, lined with colourful wooden bathing huts facing the Öresund strait.

The appeal for 2027 is the opposite of the eclipse coast. When southern Europe is at its hottest in August, Falsterbo offers long, uncrowded sand, heathland and a sea you will find bracing.

The coast is a nature reserve as much as a resort. Skåneleden, the region's official trail network, describes a 31km coastal hike round the peninsula, past the Falsterbo lighthouse (which it calls the oldest known beacon in Scandinavia) and the Måkläppen reserve, where waterfowl nest and grey and harbour seals rest. Måkläppen is closed to visitors except from November to January. Checked November 2026.

Vellinge, the local municipality, told SVT in October 2026 that it has no plans to build for the extra visitors and wants to keep the peninsula small-scale, with its eleven nature reserves. That means few hotels, so book early in 2027 for July. Lonely Planet's own guide to the area suggests July and August, and notes that many people come as a day trip from Malmö, or even Copenhagen.

Cabo de Gata, now a Jet2 package from Stansted

Cabo de Gata is the desert corner of Andalusia: volcanic headlands, agave and dunes, with coves inside a natural park that has kept most building away. A new Jet2 route from London Stansted to the Costa de Almería starts in May 2027, the airline confirmed in January 2026. Ryanair already flies Stansted to Almería, so what is new is the choice of a Jet2 package with transfers from the London end.

Playa de los Muertos is the steep walk down to white pebbles and clear water, and Playa de Macenas is the quieter grey-sand option under a watchtower further north at Mojácar, just outside the park. Mónsul and Genoveses, south-west of San José, are the classic sand bays.

Plan around the car limits. In recent summers the regional government has closed the road to Genoveses, Mónsul and nearby coves to cars once the car parks fill, from late June to late September, with a shuttle bus from San José instead. The 2026 dates are in our guide to Europe's beach rules. Checked November 2026. A trip in May or early June avoids both the controls and the heat.

New UK routes to European beaches for summer 2027

Beyond the Kavala flights for Thassos listed above, Jet2 announced these new beach routes for summer 2027 in its own releases between October 2025 and March 2026:

New nonstop flights from the US for summer 2027

United's 25 August 2026 announcement is the biggest change for American beachgoers. It adds eight new cities from Newark, six of them on European coasts, and says all new routes are subject to government approval. From the release:

For Catania, our Sicily beach guide covers the east coast. The three routes below go furthest towards a beach holiday without a connection.

Ibiza's quiet north, nonstop from Newark

From 31 May 2027, United will fly four times a week from Newark to Ibiza on its new Airbus A321XLR, and its release says no other US airline flies nonstop to the island. Without it, Americans change planes in Madrid, Barcelona or another hub.

The Ibiza worth crossing an ocean for is not the one in the club adverts. The north of the island has pine-backed coves and slower villages. Cala de Benirràs, on the north coast, is the best known, famous for the Sunday sunset drumming that grew up there decades ago.

Sant Joan's town hall has since banned the gathering on safety grounds, according to Periódico de Ibiza, and in recent summers has controlled access to the beach on Sunday afternoons and evenings, so come early or on another day. Checked November 2026. For a broader view of the Balearics, our guide to Europe's best beach holidays compares them with the rest of the Mediterranean.

United's Newark to Olbia flights start on 27 May 2027, three times a week on a Boeing 767. It will not be the only nonstop: Delta began flying from New York JFK to Olbia in May 2026, according to La Voce di New York. United's adds a New Jersey option and more seats.

Olbia is the airport for the north-east. Cala Brandinchi near San Teodoro, the shallow white-sand bay nicknamed "Little Tahiti", is a short drive south, but it now runs on bookings. San Teodoro's beach portal says access to Cala Brandinchi and neighbouring Lu Impostu needs a reservation from 1 June to 30 September, opening at 6pm two days ahead. Checked November 2026.

Further down the east coast is Cala Gonone, the base for the Gulf of Orosei. Our Cala Gonone review covers the village beach and the boats, and our Cala Goloritzé review explains its booking system and visitor cap. The Sardinia guide maps the rest of the island, including La Pelosa, which is on the north-west coast and better reached from Alghero.

Terceira, the Azores island with a nonstop from Newark

United's Newark to Terceira route starts on 9 June 2027, three times a week on a Boeing 737 MAX 8, and the airline says it will be the only US carrier on it. AirlineGeeks reports the season runs to 5 September, about 13 weeks on a small plane, so seats are limited.

Terceira is not a sun-lounger island: its beaches are a mix of sand and volcanic rock. Lajes airport is in the municipality of Praia da Vitória, whose wide bay holds Praia Grande, which Visit Portugal says has the longest stretch of sand on Terceira. On the north coast, the Biscoitos pools are black lava basins filled by the Atlantic, where the swell decides whether you swim.

Angra do Heroísmo, the island's old port town, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. Pack for an Atlantic island: the water is cooler than the Mediterranean and the weather changes fast.

What to book first, and when

Book the eclipse first. A bed on the Cádiz coast for the night of 1 August 2027 is the scarcest thing on this list, and the date will not move. Next come the once-weekly routes: Stansted and Birmingham to Kavala, Gatwick to Lesvos, Edinburgh to Pula and Chania. Jet2 has had its summer 2027 programme on sale since 15 October 2025, so the best dates go first.

For US travellers, Terceira comes first: its short season leaves the fewest seats. Book Ibiza and Olbia by early 2027. All the new United routes, Terceira included, still need government approval, so choose a flexible fare. Skanör-Falsterbo has few hotels, so book it early in 2027 too. Monte Clérigo and Cabo de Gata can wait until spring, but not much longer. If you can travel in late May or June, you get the new flights, longer days and the beaches before the August rush.
