Keem Beach (Keem Bay) is a small, sheltered Blue Flag cove at the far western end of Achill Island in Co. Mayo, where the R319 runs out. It came 50th in the World's 50 Best Beaches 2026, the only Irish beach on the list. One cliff road leads in and out. On hot summer days the car parks fill, and in summer 2025 gardaí closed the road.

What Keem Beach is like

Keem is a horseshoe of pale sand, closed in on three sides by the Benmore cliffs and the slopes of Croaghaun. The World's 50 Best Beaches editors singled out its "surprisingly blue waters". The bay was the location of Colm Doherty's house in the film The Banshees of Inisherin. According to Discover Ireland, sheep graze the slopes above in the early morning, and dolphins and basking sharks are sometimes seen from the sand.

Getting to Keem Beach from Westport

  • By car: cross the bridge at Achill Sound and follow the R319 west through Keel and Dooagh. The last stretch beyond Dooagh is a cliff-top road that ends at Keem, about 10km west of Keel. Tourism Ireland puts the drive at a little over an hour from Westport.
  • By bus: Bus Éireann route 450 runs from Westport via Achill Sound and Keel to Dooagh in about an hour and a half. For the return, the November 2026 timetable had six departures a day from Dooagh Monday to Saturday and three on Sundays. Check the summer timetable before you travel. Dooagh is the last stop, several kilometres short of Keem, so the final stretch needs a taxi, a bike or a long walk.
  • By bike: the 49km Great Western Greenway runs from Westport onto Achill. On Achill, follow the R319 west through Keel and Dooagh to Keem.

Parking, and the summer days the road closes

The car parks at the end of the road can't cope with a hot day in July or August. Every car leaves the way it came, so a full car park quickly becomes a jam on the cliff road.

On 6 August 2025, Garda Mayo said the car parks were at capacity, with serious delays, and asked the public not to travel. A week later the Connaught Telegraph reported cars parked on the double yellow lines and doubts that an ambulance could get through. Gardaí had already closed access during an earlier sunny spell that summer.

For summer 2027:

  • Arrive in the morning on any warm day in July or August.
  • Check Garda Mayo's social media before you set out.
  • Don't park on the double yellow lines. Overnight parking is banned.
  • If the road is closed, go to Keel instead.

Checked November 2026.

Swimming at Keem Bay: lifeguards, water quality and the cold

In season and in calm weather, Keem is a good place to swim: the bay is sheltered, and the EPA rated its water Excellent in each of the four years from 2022 to 2025. Mayo County Council lists the lifeguard schedule and dog rules on its Keem page. Lifeguards are on duty from 12pm to 6.30pm:

  • June: weekends and bank holidays.
  • July and August: daily.
  • September: first Saturday and Sunday only.
  • Rest of the year: none.

Checked November 2026.

Outside those hours there are lifebuoys but nobody watching, so read the beach flags and stay in your depth.

The water is cold. Met Éireann says Irish sea temperatures normally peak in August. Even then, without a wetsuit, expect a short swim. Heavy rain can trigger short-term "prior warning" notices against swimming. Current notices for Keem are on beaches.ie.

The Achill Blueway snorkel trail starts from the main car park and follows the southern side of the bay. Tourism Ireland says it works at any stage of the tide and suits beginners because the currents are weak. From mid-July, trigger fish and spider crabs turn up a few metres down.

Walks above Keem Bay: Moyteoge Head and Croaghaun

The short walk climbs from the car park onto Moyteoge Head for the view down into the bay. Komoot's mapped loop is about 2.5km with 150m of climbing and takes under an hour. The path goes up a steep slope to the cliff edge, so keep children close.

Croaghaun is a serious mountain walk. At 688m it is the westernmost peak on Achill, and the Great Western Greenway describes the cliffs on its northern side as the highest sea cliffs in Ireland and the third highest in Europe.

The Croaghaun and Achill Head loop from Keem is about 11km with 900m of ascent and takes roughly four and a half hours. Its route notes flag a technical stretch after 7km, and Achill Outdoor Education Centre describes Achill Head as a knife-edge ridge scramble. Go only in clear weather, with a map and someone who has done it before.

Beach rules and facilities

Keem is covered by Mayo County Council's 2022 beach bye-laws. Checked November 2026.

  • Bathing season: 1 June to 15 September.
  • Dogs: banned from the Blue Flag area from 12pm to 6.30pm in the bathing season. At all other times dogs must be on a leash, and you must pick up after them. Guide dogs are exempt.
  • Camping and campervans: overnight parking and camping are banned on the beach, the dunes, the grassland, the roads and the car parks without council permission.
  • Fires: no open fires, but a contained barbecue is allowed. Take your rubbish home.
  • Fines: €75 on the spot, or up to €2,000 on conviction.

Facilities are basic: toilets, bins, lifebuoys and the car parks. Discover Ireland lists access ramps but no accessible toilet. The Connaught Telegraph reported the toilets locked over Easter 2025, so don't count on them outside the summer.

When to visit Keem Beach

The best times are a June weekend or the first weekend of September. Lifeguards are on duty from 12pm to 6.30pm on those days. July and August bring daily lifeguards but also the parking problem: on hot days the car parks fill and the road can close, so arrive in the morning. The sea is at its warmest in August, though still cold. From the second week of September to May there are no lifeguards and the toilets may be locked, but the cliff walks stay open.

Keem or Keel: where to go when the road is full

Keel, about 10km back east, is the Connaught Telegraph's suggestion for days when Keem is full.

Should you go to Keem Beach?

Yes, if you want a sheltered Atlantic swim in a setting good enough to make the World's 50 Best Beaches list. The scenery is the reason to come: a pale cove under a mountain whose far side drops into the highest sea cliffs in Ireland. Cold-water swimmers and walkers heading for Croaghaun get the most from it. Its overall score is modest because of the parking and the basic facilities, not the beach itself.

Skip it on a hot July or August afternoon, when you may sit in a queue on the cliff road and never reach the sand. Surfers and wheelchair users are better served at Keel. For the other European beaches on the World's 50 Best list, see our guide to beach holidays in Europe.

The best way to see it is on a June weekend or the first weekend of September. Arrive in the morning, swim once the lifeguards come on at 12pm, then climb Moyteoge Head for the view down into the bay. Out of season, come for the walk rather than the swim.
