📍 How to Get There

Praia da Marinha is about 30 minutes east of Lagos and 20 minutes west of Albufeira by car. Follow signs from the EN125 or the A22 motorway to Benagil, then continue east to the signposted Praia da Marinha car park. There is no public bus service directly to the beach, so a rental car or taxi is the most practical option.

Photos

You will recognise Praia da Marinha before you ever visit it. That M-shaped double arch rising out of turquoise water, framed by golden limestone cliffs and stubby sea stacks. It has been on the cover of guidebooks, in airline magazines, and across thousands of travel feeds. The Michelin Guide once called it one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe, and the Portuguese government has used it in tourism campaigns for decades.

The Algarve's Most Photographed Beach, and It Earns Every Shot

But here is what those aerial drone shots do not show you. To actually reach the sand, you need to walk down a steep staircase of roughly 100 to 120 steps carved into the cliff face. There are no sunbed rentals waiting at the bottom. No beach bar. No lifeguard most of the year. And the beach itself is not huge, which means that on a peak summer afternoon, it can feel cramped despite the effort required to get there.

None of that matters once you are standing on the sand looking up at those cliffs. Praia da Marinha is the real thing. It is just worth knowing what you are getting into before you lace up your shoes and start the descent.

Getting There and the Parking Situation

Praia da Marinha sits on the central Algarve coast between Lagos and Albufeira. From Lagos, it is about a 30-minute drive east. From Albufeira, roughly 20 minutes west. You will follow signs from either the old EN125 road or the faster A22 motorway toward Benagil, then continue east to the signposted turnoff for Praia da Marinha.

There is no public bus that goes directly here, which is worth knowing if you are planning a trip without a car. Taxis from Carvoeiro cost around 10 to 15 euros each way. Most visitors rent a car, and rental rates in the Algarve are reasonable, often 20 to 35 euros per day outside peak summer.

The car park at the top of the cliff is large and, importantly, free. That is unusual for a beach this popular in the Algarve. But during July and August it fills up by 9:30 to 10am, and there is nowhere else to park nearby. Arriving early is not optional in high season. If you roll up at noon in August, you will likely turn around and leave.

The Stairs and What Waits at the Bottom

The staircase is the price of admission. Around 100 to 120 steps, depending on how you count, cut into the sandstone cliff with metal handrails along the steeper sections. Going down takes about five minutes and is straightforward enough. Coming back up is where it gets interesting. In the afternoon heat, with the Algarve sun directly overhead, those stairs feel like twice as many. Bring water. Take your time.

The stairs are manageable for most reasonably fit people. Kids handle them fine, though toddlers will need carrying. Anyone with serious knee or mobility issues should think carefully, because there is no alternative route down. If the descent to Stiniva Beach in Croatia seemed steep, this is a similar challenge but with a properly built staircase rather than a rocky scramble.

At the bottom, the beach itself is compact. Maybe 100 metres of sand backed by towering golden cliffs on three sides. The sand is coarse and mixed with small pebbles in places, nothing like the fine powder of Caribbean beaches, but perfectly comfortable for laying out a towel. What makes the beach exceptional is the setting. The cliffs around you are carved into arches, pillars, and grottos by thousands of years of wave erosion. The famous M-shaped double arch sits just offshore to the west, and on calm days you can swim right up to it.

Snorkeling and Kayaking the Grottos

The water at Praia da Marinha is some of the clearest you will find anywhere in Europe. On a calm morning, visibility reaches 10 to 15 metres easily. The rocky base of the cliffs creates natural pools and crevices that are perfect for snorkeling, and you do not need to swim far from shore to start seeing things. Small wrasse, damselfish, and the occasional octopus are common around the rock formations. Sea urchins dot the submerged boulders, so watch where you put your feet.

Bring your own gear. There are no rental shops on the beach. You can buy basic snorkeling sets in Carvoeiro or Lagoa for 15 to 25 euros, or bring them from home. The best snorkeling is along the western cliff wall where the rocks create sheltered channels.

Kayaking is the other major activity here, and it opens up parts of the coast you cannot reach on foot or by swimming. Several operators run guided kayak tours from Praia da Marinha or from nearby Benagil, typically costing 30 to 45 euros per person for a two-hour trip. The tours paddle along the cliff base, ducking into sea caves and grottos that are invisible from above. On calm days, the kayaking here is spectacular. Rough water days mean cancellations, so check conditions in advance. The coast around here sits in the same league as Cala Goloritze in Sardinia or Navagio Beach in Greece when it comes to dramatic coastal scenery.

The Cliff Walk to Benagil Cave

One of the best reasons to visit Praia da Marinha is the Seven Hanging Valleys trail, a cliff-top hiking path that connects it westward to Benagil and beyond. The section from Praia da Marinha to Benagil is about 2.5 kilometres and takes roughly 40 to 50 minutes at a comfortable pace. The trail follows the cliff edge with views down into hidden coves, natural arches, and sinkholes where the limestone has collapsed into the sea below.

The path is mostly flat and well-trodden, though there are a few sections where the ground gets uneven and the cliff edge comes close. Proper shoes help. Flip-flops will work but are not ideal. The wildflowers along the trail in spring, particularly in April and May, are beautiful and add colour to an already dramatic landscape.

At Benagil, the trail connects to the village where you can arrange a kayak or stand-up paddleboard to visit the famous Benagil Cave, the sea cave with a hole in its ceiling that has become one of Portugal's most iconic images. You cannot access the cave on foot, only by water. Boat tours from Benagil cost about 20 euros per person for a short trip. Kayak rentals from the Benagil beach run 15 to 20 euros per hour.

If you are visiting the Algarve specifically for its beaches, this stretch of coastline between Praia da Marinha and Benagil is the highlight. You could easily spend a full day between the beach, the cliff walk, and a kayak trip into the caves. Pack lunch, because there is nothing to buy on the trail or on Marinha beach itself. The nearest restaurants are back up at the car park or in Benagil village.

Crowds and When to Visit

Praia da Marinha is popular, but the stairs act as a natural filter. The effort of going down and back up discourages casual visitors, which means crowd levels stay lower than you might expect for a beach this famous. You will never have it to yourself in summer, but compared to the big resort beaches in Albufeira, it is a different world.

July and August are the busiest months. The beach fills up by late morning and stays packed until about 4pm when the shade from the western cliffs starts to creep across the sand. If you visit in peak summer, arriving before 9am gives you the best experience, both for parking and for space on the sand.

The real sweet spot is May to June and September. Water temperatures are warm enough for comfortable swimming (18 to 22 degrees Celsius), the cliff walk is pleasant without the searing heat, and the beach feels spacious. October can still work for the hike and the views, though the water starts to cool and some kayak operators wind down for the season. Is Praia da Marinha Worth the Effort?

Without question. The staircase is a minor inconvenience for one of the most visually striking beaches on the entire European coastline. The water clarity is outstanding. The cliff formations are world-class. The snorkeling is genuinely good. And the connected hiking trail to Benagil gives you a full day of coastal scenery that rivals anything in the Mediterranean.

Just come prepared. Bring water, food, sunscreen, and your own snorkeling gear. Wear real shoes for the stairs and the cliff walk. Arrive early in summer. And save some energy for the climb back up, because after a few hours of swimming in that clear water, those 100-plus steps are going to feel like a proper workout.

The Algarve has dozens of beautiful beaches. Praia da Marinha is the one that makes people book return trips.
